Panic Attacks

Like all animals,we as human beings have evolved ways to help us protect ourselves from danger and external threats. When we feel under threat, our bodies react by releasing certain hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can be helpful. These hormones:

  • make us feel aware and alert, so at the point of danger, we can react more appropriately

  • make our hearts beat faster, quickly sending blood to where it's needed most.

After we feel the threat has passed and we feel safe again, our bodies release other hormones to help our muscles relax. This can sometimes cause us to shake. At this point, we can go into a state of Panic; this is commonly called the 'fight, flight or freeze' response.

Causes of Panic Attacks

Why do we have
Panic Attacks?

When we experience a Panic Attack it can seem as if our body has been taken over. Sometimes, there is a rise or flash of heat, followed by a change in our breathing. The feeling can be quite terrifying, but we are the unwitting creators of these feelings, be they conscious thoughts or background programmes still running. Environmental factors and or thoughts sometimes trigger them.

The wonderful thing about Hypnotherapy for Panic Attacks is it can help to adapt their thought patterns and even reshape how they feel about the experiences that they have had over their life.

There is a strong link to anxiety and earlier emotional challenges, particularly in childhood and the earlier years of adulthood, when we are more easily influenced. That doesn't have to be the case; life can have its challenges at any time, and if we do not necessarily have processed or resolved an issue, that may be a catalyst for panic attacks.

There are of course, physiological reasons that can exacerbate the symptoms and experience of  Panic Attacks. For example, it is known that those going through menopause and also those with Thyroid issues are more prone to experiencing symptoms of anxiety. Although these things can exasperate a situation or feeling, they are seldom the actual cause.

The Brain and Panic Attacks

Understanding the science
behind panic Attacks.

Feeling Anxious is a complex emotion that can be described as a feeling of apprehension or fear about the future, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, and muscle tension. In the context of psychology, anxiousness and some anxiety, is considered a normal and adaptive response to stress or danger, but when it becomes chronic or excessive, it can interfere with daily life. We can literally be waiting for this feeling of Panic to overwhelm us. Not realising that our thoughts are indeed the prime force in the causation of this state of Panic.

The brain structures involved in anxiety include the amygdala, which is responsible for processing emotions, particularly fear, and the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in decision-making and regulating emotional responses. The amygdala plays a crucial role in the fear response by triggering the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, and activating the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to physical symptoms of fear.

The nervous system also plays a key role in anxiety, with the sympathetic nervous system responsible for the "fight or flight" response and the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for calming the body down after a stressful event. In individuals with anxiety disorders, the sympathetic nervous system may become overactive, leading to chronic stress and heightened anxiety symptoms. This may involve repetitive thoughts about a subject matter that we perceive as giving us Anxiety and thereby fueling Panic Attacks.

Overall, anxiety is a complex emotion that involves a range of psychological, brain, and nervous system factors. Understanding these factors can help individuals with Panic Attacks. It is letting go of control and a need to be safe that, ironically, is the pathway out of Anxiety.

How can Hypnotherapy for Panic Attacks work for me?

What might Hypnotherapy
for Panic Attacks
do for you?

Anxiety often seems like a battle; part of our unconscious is creating this feeling. The reason may or may not be known at a conscious level. This struggle can be played out over and over again in our mind in specific locations or contexts. At times, it can be all-consuming and seem to be constant. We as human beings obviously do not enjoy the feeling of being anxious and try naturally to control or resist this feeling; we also tend to externalise the feeling, meaning we feel as if something is taking over us at these times. We need to recognise that everything we feel, good or bad, is generated by our unconscious processes and is just part of us that strives for the need to feel safe.

Hypnotherapy can help us have a completely different experience. Our nervous system is adaptable and can change. Using Hypnotherapy for Panic Attacks can generate real change. Please feel free to contact me to book a session. Don't let panic attacks ruin your life.

Anxiety, as a feeling, exists to warn us of a threat, perceived or real, but whatever it is, it is really just reflecting back to us our unconsciously held beliefs. The not wanting to experience the feeling of Anxiety often ionically gives us even more Anxiety, the fear of the fear. Seeing through the illusion of the protection pattern is the way out. I can't guarantee an outcome, but there is every chance of profound change. By employing Hypnotherapy and other therapeutic techniques, I aim to help my clients not just to live with the feeling but to release the grip of the experience of Anxiety.
